ENGINEERING GEOLOGY AND PETROGRAPHY

Engineering Geology Division deals with petrographic examination of rocks and natural aggregates, seismological investigations around major reservoirs, geophysical investigation, pre construction and construction stage engineering geological investigation including construction material survey.

Engineering geological investigation for water resources projects, which includes, the study of surface & sub-surface geological condition. Preparation of foundation maps and treatment if required.

Geophysical Investigation

Geophysical investigations with electrical resistivity method are carried out for soil resistivity, ground water prospecting and engineering geological investigations.

Petrographic  Examination

Megascopic and Microscopic examination of rocks, mineral constituents and their characteristics study is carried out. Petrographic analysis of coarse and fine aggregates to identify the chemically deleterious  and physically poor constituents which affect the quality of concrete and mortar.  To carry out above test I.S. No 2386-1963   (part -VIII) and I.S. No 383-1970 are used.

Petrological polarizing microscope and stereo microscope are the main equipments used for testing. Procurement of Trinoculor polarizing microscope and stereo zoom microscope is under progress for modernization of Petrological Laboratory
