DAM SAFETY

There is a separate Dam Safety Organisation (DSO) under GERI headed by a Joint Director (Dam Safety). He is assisted by Executive Engineers & Deputy Executive Engineers of Civil, Mechanical and Electrical wings.  

There are 588 large dams in the state of which 185 are major and medium dams and 403 are minor dams. The major and medium dams are regularly inspected by DSO team once in 2-3 years whereas  all minor dams are regularly inspection by DSO team once in 10 years.

There are 85 gated dams in the state, which are inspected by civil as well as mechanical (M) and electrical (E) teams of DSO. These are inspected once in two years. During inspection an overall view of health status of dam and its performance is taken. Remedial measures are suggested.  

DSO publishes report on health status and activities of dam safety organisation once in two years. It also organises workshops in different regions of the state to educate the project officers with the various requirements of dam safety.
