Junction design: The junctions or intersections of the Rural as well as urban roads are being designed as per the guidelines framed by the Ministry of Road Transport, & Highways, New Delhi. The intersections are designed on the base of projected detailed traffic data to justify the need of an intersection of the appropriate type out of the several types viz. Rotary/channelised intersection/ Round about pedestals etc. Keeping in view the relevant IRC guidelines.

Road roughness Index: Road roughness measurement with the help of fifth wheel Bump Integrator unit is being carried out on the various types of roads and the analysis of the data collected to find out the relevant Road Roughness Index and the classification of the road according to its riding quality as per the norms fixed by the MORTH, NEW DELHI. It can measure the depth and pattern of the defects and helps in deciding technique to be adopted for repair work of the road. Also after construction of road, the riding quality of newly constructed road can be checked. |

Traffic management and accident studies: Data base collection, analysis and research on traffic problems, accidents, pedestrians'/drivers' psychology, with the help of various traffic surveys like traffic density, quality of traffic, type, peak hour survey and accident studies. Projection of results for planning of road net work, proper placement of road signs, sign boards, traffic control etc. and suggestion of safety measures, to estimate the economic cost of accident and to forecast the no. of accidents, to participate in various exhibitions.

Noise meter: One of the specific environmental elements was highway generated noise. Noise is unwanted sound. Too much noise is objectionable and some time even injurious to the human ear and the nervous system. Noise is measured in decibel. This institute has one noise meter to measure the highway generated noise. It is very useful to measure noise level in silence zones of cities.

Retroreflectometer: This institute has one retro reflectometer. On our highways, there are lot of sign boards of red, yellow, green, white, blue, etc. of reflective material. In night the driver can see the signs easily. If the quality of material is not good the reflectivity is poor hence accidents may occur. For this purpose for testing reflectivity of material in lab. this instrument is very useful.

Alcohol Breath Analyser: One of the main cause of accident on highways is alcohol. Driver consumes the alcohol during the driving and hence accident takes place. For this blood test is the only legal test. However every time a medical officer may not be available on site. Hence one instrument is developed. The instrument takes breath of driver and shows the content of alcohol in the blood. This is very useful instrument.

Doppler radar: On highways drivers drive the vehicle so fast and overtake the other vehicle. At that time accident may take place. For this purpose to check the speed of vehicle the Doppler radar instrument is developed and is purchased by this institute to check the speed on highways. This instrument is very useful to measure speed of vehicles in "speed limit" zones of roads.
