SOIL DYNAMICS

Liquefaction Potential of Soils

Generally non-cohesive, uniformly graded, loosely compacted and fully saturated soils liquefy under the action of earthquakes and hence it is necessary to assess liquefaction potential of soils.

A very highly sophisticated Cyclic Triaxial test system useful in evaluating liquefaction potential of soils, imported from Japan is available with the institute. The set up is electro-hydraulically operated servo controlled closed loop system. The system contains 2-channel synchroscope and possible cyclic loading wave forms are sinusoidal, triangular and rectangular. A complete test record is obtained on a printer at the end of the test for interpretation and analysis.

The set up is useful in determining stress required for causing liquefaction of soil under design earthquake parameters.
